Recent studies have shown that to obtain an accurate assessment of haemodynamic occlusive disease in the peripheral arteries, the aortoiliac segment must also be included in the scan. Doppler waveform analysis of the common femoral artery alone can lead to erroneous information, as the common femoral waveforms can become relatively normal even with moderate proximal aortoiliac occlusive disease.
Advances in ultrasound techniques in recent years have simplified the study of the abdominal vasculature. We routinely include both the aortoiliac and peripheral arteries when scanning the patient with peripheral arterial disease. (The patient is still only charged for the cost of one scan).
